HOMEWORK HELP OPPORTUNITIES

Homework is an important ingredient for success in any subject.  There are two different venues available to all students at Chicopee Comprehensive for them to receive help with their homework.  The teaching staff is more than willing and happy to provide the assistance.  There is a late bus on every Tuesday and Thursday for Comprehensive students. The school library is also open those two days if students need to do research or check out a book. The late bus leaves the site at 3:08 pm and will deliver any student to the stop nearest their home.  It is our way of inviting students to stay for help on those days.  The second is the Big Y Homework Help Hotline 1-800-866 Big Y.  There are certified teachers answering the phones on Monday thru Thursday from 4 till 7 pm to give assistance to students in kindergarten through grade 12.  All the data indicates that students completing homework and reviewing content are most likely to succeed.

HEALTH/PE & CONSUMER SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

Physical Education:  Students enrolled in Physical Education classes are very active and are required to participate wearing appropriate, functional attire.  During the fall, classes are outside on a daily basis and students should come prepared for cool weather or for damp grass during early morning classes.  Second semester requires all students to participate in a minimum of two weeks of swimming or aquatic activities.  Students must wear bathing suits and are allowed to wear optional t-shirts over swimwear when they enter the pool.  Students are required to bring a doctors note if they will not be able to participate for medical reasons.  Alternative activities and written reports are used for student make-ups.  Please make sure your students are ready for activity on a daily basis.  Physical Education can be a beneficial part of a student’s day.

Health & Consumer Science: Two new outstanding educators were welcomed to the department at the beginning of the year. Mr. Al Dobson has relocated to this area with many years of experience in the states of Rhode Island and New Hampshire.  He is a Springfield College graduate and will be teaching in the Health and PE area.  The second member to join the staff is Ms. Julie Thayer, a recent graduate from Springfield College with a degree in Health and Consumer Science.  Ms Thayer is also the Girl’s Cross Country coach this fall.  The addition of these two teachers will serve the Health/PE/Consumer Science Dept  with their enthusiasm, fresh ideas, and energy.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding H/PE/CS, please contact Mr. Lemanski, Department Supervisor at 594-3534, or email klemanski@chicopee.mec.edu

GUIDANCE GRAPEVINE

Student who are planning to attend four-year college or who are majoring in Nursing, Engineering, or other technical fields at a two year college, are recommended to take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) and are required to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test I (SAT) or American College Test (ACT).  In addition, in some cases, students will be required to take achievement tests in certain subjects called the Scholastic Aptitude Test II (SATII).  It is recommended that students take the SAT I or ACT, and possibly the SATII, twice because colleges take the highest scores for admission decisions.  All Colleges do not have the same requirements, so carefully review what is needed.

November 6, 2004  SAT I  Deadline for sign up October 13.
